Living in the Country – Have you Considered the

Pleasures & Pluses?

v Quietness, peacefulness, privacy, space & a feeling of safety.

v You can see the stars, the sunrise, the sunset and wildlife.

v You can appreciate nature and creation.

v No close neighbors, no one else’s dogs living close by, and no chlorine in the water.

v You can have bigger gardens and pets larger than dogs, or even livestock.

v You can sit on the front porch with no one bothering you, have a wiener roast on an open fire instead of a grill & do what you want when you want.

v It’s a great place to raise children with plenty of yard for kids and dogs, & jobs to teach responsibility.

But Did You Know?

v That you’ll have farmers for neighbors and they run noisy combines late into the night, create lots of dust at planting and harvest time, haul manure providing a distinct country fragrance, have machinery that doesn’t move very fast on the roads, and use chemicals that can drift onto your lawn and garden.

v That winter commonly brings frozen waterlines and drifted driveway entrances.

v That a large part of rural Hancock County has sulfur water which has a distinctive smell and taste, can leave spots on clothes, and corrode appliances.

v That it is dangerous to burn trash outdoors because field fires start easily and spread quickly and there is no leaf removal.

v That all kinds of critters (skunks, dogs, deer, coyote, cattle, mice, raccoon & fox to name a few) often come to visit.

v That it can be lonely when your closest neighbors are ¼ mile or more away.
